Professor David M. Ndetei, psychiatrist in KNH and UoN, Department of Psychiatry Faculty of Health Sciences, paid a courtesy call to the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor (Ag), Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson on 3rd July 2025, and he officially donated his 9th book, Tasman’s Psychiatry, to the University. His donation of the 6 books in one volume, was made with the support of the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB).

During the visit, Prof. Ndetei, being the only African author amongst the 8 in the volume, emphasized the importance of local contributions to the global mental health field. “This is my contribution and a way of giving back not just to the University of Nairobi, my alma mater, not just to Kenya, not just to Africa but to the Global society. I believe UoN being a premier university will have the books reach the greater society.” The internationally renowned book, by the Professor alongside other global mental experts, is a significant contribution in the mental health advocacy and to the society. The book reflects the importance of increasing attention to the role of culture and social determinants of mental health.

The VC expressed gratitude for the generous donation, commending the professor for his continued contribution to academia, mental health practice and empowerment of future generations. “We really celebrate this success of your publishing of the book especially amid the challenge being faced by researchers recently,” she added.

Present were Dr. Victoria Mutiso, the Director of Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health, Prof. Jackson Maalu, DVC Finance, Planning and Development, Prof. John Mande,  DVC Human Resource and Adminiistration, Mr. John Orindi, Director Corporate Affairs and Dr. Michael Wangai, Quality Assurance officer.
