The University of Nairobi-Women’s Economic Empowerment (UoN-WEE) Hub, led by Prof. Wanjiku Kabira, has taken yet another significant step with the launch of a technology training program on fish-value addition at the Kenya Institute of Research, Development and Innovation (KIRDI) Western Region Center in Kisumu County. The launch was graced by the Kisumu Governor, Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Friday, 12th May 2023.

The training aims to equip women with requisite skills to preserve fish and increase shelf life, benefiting traders dealing in both small fish (locally known as ‘Omena’) as well as big fish.

The program will also ensure the participants observe hygienic conditions during the handling and processing of fish, ultimately preventing contamination and ensuring consumer safety hence maximizing their profit margins.

Governor Nyong’o lauded the Women Economic Empowerment Hub, for its continued efforts to empower women economically and encourage participants to dream big, emphasizing the immense potential the fish business holds.

Other technology training programs recently launched by the WEE Hub are value addition to bananas in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties, value addition to milk in Kajiado County and grain processing in Turkana County.
