A Report by Mr. Sila Harmaton

For many young men, the dream of becoming Mr. Universities Kenya begins with a desire to showcase their talents, intellect, and commitment to societal betterment. Sila Harmaton, a dedicated fourth-year student at the Faculty of Education Arts and a first-year student at the Faculty of Law at the University of Nairobi, was no exception. Growing up with aspirations to inspire others and make a meaningful impact, Harmaton's journey was driven by passion and a deep sense of purpose.

Harmaton faced numerous challenges from the onset. Raised in a humble background by a single mother, he endured the heartbreaking loss of his mother to throat cancer while preparing for his KCSE national examinations as a Form Four candidate. Despite this major setback, Harmaton remained resolute. He had promised his mother, Esther Mwelu Ndeto, that he would achieve greatness, and he dedicated his quest for leadership to her memory.

The University of Nairobi played a crucial role in helping Harmaton realize his dream. The university sponsored him with KSH 40,000, which covered the boot camp and registration fees for the competition.

To compete in this national competition, contestants needed to hold a title. Fortunately, Sila Harmaton was the reigning Mr. University of Nairobi for the 2023/2024 academic year. This support was instrumental in providing him the opportunity to shine on a larger stage.

A total of 74 universities, each represented by two contestants, registered for the competition, bringing the total to 148 competitors. Before the main event, all participants underwent a rigorous three-day training and boot camp at Egerton University, Njoro. This period was filled with intense preparations, physical training, and modeling skill development. Contestants were tested not only on their physical appearance but also on their intellect through Q&A sessions, which evaluated their IQ and ability to handle pressure.

On the final night, emotions ran high. The pressure, anticipation, and dreams of a lifetime culminated on stage. It was an all-night affair, featuring back-to-back runway showcases across various categories. At the end of the event, when Harmaton’s name was announced as Mr. Universities Kenya, the moment was one of overwhelming joy and validation of years of hard work and sacrifice. Tears of happiness, the roar of the crowd, and the realization of achieving his dream were indescribable.

Being crowned Mr. Universities Kenya was akin to being acknowledged as the president of all universities in the country—a true leader and role model for thousands of students.

Winning the Mr. Universities Kenya title was not just about the crown for Harmaton; it was about the platform it provided to make a difference. He embarked on campaigns, championed meaningful causes, and inspired countless young men to believe in their dreams. As Mr. Universities Kenya, Harmaton became a symbol of excellence, leadership, and the embodiment of the values and aspirations not only of University of Nairobi students but also of students across the nation.

For Harmaton, modeling was more than just runway fashion; it was a calling to advocate for causes he believed in. He used his title to promote education, raise awareness about cancer, and encourage young people to pursue their dreams with determination and resilience.

Harmaton’s journey to becoming Mr. Universities Kenya is a testament to the power of dreams, the importance of perseverance, and the impact of using one’s platform to advocate for change. His story continues to inspire, showing that with support, dedication, and a clear vision, anything is possible.
