The Mitsubishi Corporation and University of Nairobi are celebrating 10 years of partnership and support to students through scholarships.

To date, at its 60th anniversary since its inception in Kenya, the Corporation has awarded 126 bright and needy students from Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, BSc in Environmental Conservation and Resource Management and BEd Geography.

“The Mitsubishi Corporation International Scholarship started in 2009 with 9 students benefiting from the program. Since then the number has grown from 9 students per year to 14 students per year,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o. “Equally the growth has also been reflected in gender balance and regional representation. Each student has been awarded Mitsubishi scholar with value of 62,500 to assist in financing academic requirements. Currently a total of Ksh 8,710,500 has been disbursed towards this noble financial support for the last ten years.”

Prof. Ogeng’o was speaking on behalf of the ag. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Mbeche.

Mitsubishi Corporation Regional CEO, Yasuhiro, Doida, said that the key issue of any business is not to make money, but to have a significant contribution to the society.

“With over 90 branches across the globe, Mitsubithi Corporation has contributed immensely towards the betterment of life of many people and more so towards scholarship contribution of bright and needy students in the institutions of higher learning,” he said. “When your life becomes successful, that is when the scholarship was useful. We need you to succeed in life.”

Two alumni students who were given an opportunity to speak, thanked the Mitsubishi Corporation for their sponsorship, which enabled them to successfully finish their university education and get jobs. They are now experts in environmental conservation and sustainability champions.

The Chairman, Department of Geography, Dr. Boniface Wambua, requested the management of Mitsubishi Corporation to consider expanding their sponsorship to include research in environmental conservation and climate change.
